Ear cosmetic surgery

Ear cosmetic surgery, which consists of shaping of the ear, also known as otoplasty, is a very popular cosmetic surgery procedure today. The goal of ear cosmetic surgery is usually to correct misshapen ears or ears that stick out to far by he patient’s standards. Ear cosmetic surgery helps many people feel more comfortable in their appearance. Prior to ear cosmetic surgery, many people are very upset by the appearance of their ears, so much so that choosing a way to where their hair may even be difficult.

Ear cosmetic surgery is usually performed as an outpatient procedure with local anesthesia instead of general anesthesia, reducing the risks associated with and the overall cost of the procedure. It also usually takes no more than two hours for a well-trained cosmetic surgeon to complete ear cosmetic surgery on a patient. Additionally, unlike with other cosmetic surgeries, the results of ear cosmetic surgery can be seen immediately after the procedure is completed. Even discomfort after ear cosmetic surgery is most often very slight.

There are many possible steps in ear cosmetic surgery. One step in ear cosmetic surgery consists of remolding and reshaping the patient’s external ear, or pinna. If this step of ear cosmetic surgery is performed, small incisions are made behind the patient’s ear that allows the cosmetic surgery physician to reshape and possibly even trim the cartilage in the area in order to make the ear bend how and where the patient wants it to. Another step that may occur in ear cosmetic surgery is an almost “pinning” of the ears, which reduces how far a patient’s ears stick out from the sides of his or her head.

After ear cosmetic surgery a patient must wear a snug bandage on his or her ears for at least twenty-four hours. Once this bandage is removed, the patient will where a headband like one would wear while skiing to support his or her ears as they heal. The patient must wear this headband for the first five to seven days after having ear cosmetic surgery. Subsequently, the patient is still required to wear the headband at night for at least six weeks.

Though healing and pain from ear cosmetic surgery is minimal when compared to other procedures, it is still vital that a patient follow his or her doctor’s orders. The patient also should go to every aftercare appointment with his or her doctor after the ear cosmetic surgery in order to ensure proper healing of the affected areas. A patient’s healing from ear cosmetic surgery will usually proceed smoothly without any complications if he or she follows his or her doctor’s instructions.
