There is no specific brand of printer for a laptop. Laptops are made generically for any form of computer, even hand held devices. However, the most popular and well respected printer brand is Hewlett-Packard Company. HP was introduced in 1979 with their release of the a thermal inkjet program. The release of the ‘ThinkJet” in 1984 brought HP into the limelight. The PaintJet followed shortly after in 1987 with the first color printer.

However, the printers that were released previously were nothing compared to the DeskJet that was released in 1988. It did not contain color ink at the time, but it was said to produce “laser-like” printing quality. At the time, the printer was priced at $1,000. During the release of the printer it was said to be the most affordable printer compared to the other compact printers on the market. Apple brands had just released their “AppleWriter” and many consumers favored the DeskJet more. Other laser printers were still larger in size and much greater in price. HP released a color version of the DeskJet in 1991.

After production decreased the price of the DeskJet was cut in half. By this time, DeskJets were being sold with black and three-color cartridge choices that could be installed at the same time. Many still prefer the DeskJets compared to other printers because of the disposable printer head that is included with the ink cartridge. The quality of the printing is also superior because the ink has to be constantly replaced meaning that the printer head would be too. This would also mean that there would not need to be a frequent head cleaning cycle that usually takes up most of the ink.
The DeskJet has expanded into the art industry with the production of the DesignJet, PhotoSmart, and Professional Series printer styles. Each printer is made with thermal inkjet technology that made HP so popular in the beginning. The most advanced color printers have a color coded chart embedded into the printer so that color companies can produce the correct color chosen by the client.
There has been many discontinued DeskJet’s throughout the years. The original DeskJet was discontinued shortly after it was introduced with color and black ink together. HP is constantly trying to improve the performance of the printer and the color quality. In order to gain the most revenue from the newer printers, the company discontinues the older printers. Obviously, the newer printers are greater in price compared to the others, so in turn it brings in a great deal of profit to HP. The ironic thing is that the printers that have been discontinued, especially the original, will be worth a great deal of money some day. The future generations will lovingly refer to the printer as an antique.
